” A friend and I had the pleasure recently of a weeklong retreat and printmaking workshop with Francesco Geronazzo, at his Italian studio in the lovely countryside and hills of Emilia-Romagna, a short drive south of Bologna.

Our time consisted of long, but highly enjoyable and productive days in the studio. Time was spent learning or improving a number of printmaking techniques. These included intaglio and relief printing, aluminium etching, paper lithography and artist book preparation. Other skills were on hand had we been able to fit them in!

We were also able to acquire invaluable knowledge while observing Francesco organise and conduct studio work himself. We were a very small group so the learning experience was continuous and intense, but there remained multiple opportunities to enjoy local dining venues, to cook and eat together at Francesco’s home, and to explore local places of cultural and natural interest.

Francesco is an experienced and expert teacher, able to accommodate a wide range of printmaking interests, ideas and challenges, and levels of experience. I particularly like his commitment to the intellectual engagement of printmaking as well as his problem-solving approach to learning. He is also a very warm person and hospitable host so our week together flew by quickly, and left us inspired and better-equipped to pursue additional printmaking experiences.

For myself, I hope these include, one day, a return to Francesco’s Italian retreat as well as a workshop at his Margaret River studio, closer to home. “

“The potential of printmaking for my practice has increased many fields. I will be doing a lot more printmaking!

You have to do it, particularly in a place like Greenhills Arts Centre. It’s the most welcoming place and the artists are very generous”

“I loved the whole retreat, from the location to the food to fabulous old house! The most valuable thing I learnt was to stay focused on a theme and work through to resolve it.

The workshop and trip long format allowed me to really take my time and work on a theme without introducing off genre. It allowed me to be more experimental and take some risks.
Francesco was great at showing us some techniques, then allow us to explore in the direction we wanted to go. He was very supportive of everyone in the group, assisting as people needed. The group was fantastic. Francesco was warm, welcoming, funny & approachable, it made everyone feel welcome and part of the group.

I also loved the results of my printmaking 🙂

” Do the retreat, absolutely! Worth every penny – Highly recommended !”

“One of the most valuable things I learned during the retreat was to respect mistakes — they can often be fixed — and that there are many different approaches and techniques in printmaking. The workshop gave me confidence to continue adding to and changing work as it evolves, rather than feeling locked into what’s already been done.

What I found especially helpful was the patience, immense knowledge, and the ability to move between class members and adapt to everyone’s individual needs and questions. The atmosphere was vibrant, positive, and deeply inspiring, and being taught by someone so well versed in every aspect of the subject made the experience even more rewarding.

I would absolutely recommend this workshop to anyone considering it. It’s an amazing experience that broadens your perspective and encourages creative growth at any level. One of my favourite highlights was not only learning the processes themselves, but also the energy of the class and the meaningful conversations throughout.”

” Words cannot describe how incredible the 2024 Italian Printmaking Retreat was! Francesco made me feel immediately welcomed and accepted into his artistic space, creating a culturally rich and authentic environment.

My experience with Francesco as my mentor can be summed up by the Japanese proverb: “Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.” His guidance provided valuable knowledge of techniques that I will cherish forever.

I am truly grateful for this transformative experience and highly recommend this retreat to anyone looking to grow artistically! “

” I believe as an artist that in order to immerse ourselves with creative pleasure and total concentration, the space that surrounds us, the studio, the surrounding landscape, the chosen place is fundamental. For me, creating is a gift we give to ourselves, a physical but also spiritual space that has no time.
The Margaret River Printmaking space has everything described to make you feel at home.
A welcoming laboratory, an intaglio press that is the undisputed master, all the materials you may need or desire.
All wrapped in the silence of the Apennines. The green hills from the window and inside the smell of wood that blends with the ink.
It was a pleasure to work, especially supported by Francesco’s cheerful look and professionalism”

” Attending the symposium at Francesco Geronazzo’s studio was an immersive experience, in which I rediscovered the sense of belonging and collaboration that is rarely found outside the academic environment.  Located in the picturesque vicinity of Castel del Rio, along the Santerno river, the studio was not just a place of work, but a refuge for creativity and sharing.  Francesco, with his experience and sensitivity, has been able to create a context that reflects the care and attention typical of a true master.  I felt surrounded by his professionalism and accompanied in every phase, from the conception to the development of the matrix, up to the revealing moment, that of printing.

Every detail was followed with the utmost care: the materials, generously provided by the studio, and the continuous support during the engraving made the process fluid and free of distractions.  I was able to concentrate on artistic expression, knowing that I always had ready support for operational procedures in the graphic field.  Working in such an attentive and respectful environment, where art and humanity merge, brought back memories of my studies at the Academy, but with a new awareness and deep gratitude for this opportunity.  In the end, the result was a print run of 10 copies, as well as five artist’s proofs, but the true gift of this experience was what I took home with me: an authentic memory of a time dedicated to art and  discovery ” – Agim Sako –
